Hushwood began with a simple observation during visits to Koh Samui in the early 2010s. The island had become a destination for people from around the world seeking warmth, beauty, and a slower pace of life. Yet there were few places designed specifically for elderly residents who wished to spend their later years in this peaceful tropical setting, surrounded by care that understood both their needs and the unique rhythms of island living.
The founders — a small group with backgrounds in hospitality, elder care, and island community work — spent several years developing the concept. They spoke with families who had aging parents living abroad, with retirees already on the island, and with local Thai communities experienced in multi-generational care traditions. What emerged was a vision for a residence that would blend comfortable living spaces, compassionate daily support, and the unhurried atmosphere of Koh Samui's quieter western coast.
Construction began in 2016 on a plot of land in Taling Ngam, chosen for its gentle terrain, proximity to beaches, and distance from the island's busier commercial areas. The timber-framed buildings were designed to stay cool through natural ventilation, with wide verandas, louvered windows, and mature trees providing shade. Gardens were planted with native palms, frangipani, and herb beds, creating green spaces for walking and quiet reflection.
Hushwood opened its doors in January 2018 with a small initial group of residents. Over the years since, the community has grown carefully, always maintaining a scale that allows staff to know each person individually and tailor support to their preferences. The residence now includes the main building with shared rooms, a wellness program coordinator, and several standalone bungalows for those seeking more private accommodations.
Today, Hushwood serves residents from various countries and cultural backgrounds, united by a desire for peaceful island living with reliable care. Families appreciate the transparency, the cultural sensitivity, and the understanding that aging is not a problem to be solved but a stage of life to be lived with comfort and respect.

Finally, we value the slow rhythm of island time. Unlike facilities focused on efficiency and schedule maximization, Hushwood allows days to unfold at a comfortable pace. There is time for conversation, for sitting quietly on the veranda, for watching the sunset, for living without hurry.
